Wendell Castle, Seven Days of the Week Dining Table and Ten Chairs, USA, 1997
From the collection of a notable art and design collector, the dining table features an asymmetricalย top supported by seven polychromedย sculptural legs reminiscent of arthropods. Ten accompanying chairsย with black suede upholsteryย are supported byย continuous frames, running along the floor, up, around, and back again.ย One of the most celebrated designers of the past six decades, Wendell Castle advanced the concept of โart furnitureโ beyond the studio craft movement of the 1950s and 60s. In the early 1980s, Castle began adding a contemporary spin to historic styles such as Biedermeier, Art Deco, and Art Nouveau. This new vision incorporated carved and polychromed wood with unusual hand-carved shapes, and limitless imagination. As Castleโs reputation grew he brought studio furniture out of the niche craft circles and into an expanded national audience, with galleries, museums and press recognizing design as a legitimate form of fine art.
