Gareth Neal, Louis Occasional Tables, UK, 2013
Gareth Nealโs unique occasional tables pay homage to historic design through new innovations in wood carving technology.
The exterior structures ofย the occasional tables have been meticulously chipped away to reveal interior shapes that emulate traditionalย Louis XV furniture styles. Across his repertoire, Neal combines CNC technology and three-dimensional computer drawing with traditional techniques in wood carving to create unique contemporary interpretations of historic subject matter. Nealโs works can be seen as โcontemporary relics,โ reawakeningย interest in the historic while offering a fresh approach to contemporary design.
Featured in public and private collections worldwide, Neal has both literally and figuratively shaped a new era in design and craftsmanship. Currently, Neal is collaborating with Zaha Hadid on a line of innovative sculptures inspired by ancient vessels. Nealโsย 5-Drawer Georgeย was part of the critically-acclaimed exhibition, โAgainst the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft, and Design,โ hosted by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, NY; the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and the Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, Washington. Hisย George IIIย Chestย resides in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In 2016,ย Big Georgeย was exhibited at the distinguished Winter Antiques Show in New York, NY.
