Djivan Schapira, Pair of Cross-Cut Nightstands, 2021
Djivan Schapira creates unique works of collectible design that draw inspiration from his split childhood growing up between the French countryside and New York City. The son of a master craftsman, he developed an advanced woodworking practice over the course of 15 years as an apprentice cabinet maker. In his early 20s, he began experimenting with resins, developing techniques and a distinct style that would become the cornerstone of his artistic output.
Schapira showcases his innovative approach to design in his Les Fleurs collection. Drawing inspiration from nature and influenced by โ70s-era florals and Pop Art, Schapira embeds cross-cuts of wood, pinecones, and other organic materials in resin, revealing their inherent beauty. During his studies at Parsons, Schapira delved into resin experimentation, laying the groundwork for his distinctive style that would later be translated into the Les Fleurs collection, as well as his recent Solar Sailor collection. In the past few years he has built a reputation for crafting bespoke furniture and dรฉcor, collaborating with global designers for installations in prestigious venues such as the Hoxton in Los Angeles and the Waldorf Astoria in Qatar, showcasing his mastery of material, space, and engineering.
In May 2022, Djivan was the winning recipient of both Emerging Product Designer of the Year Award in the Furniture category, as well as the Peopleโs Choice Award which crossed all mediums. His work has been featured in world-renowned publications including Interior Design Magazine, Architectural Digest, Modern Luxury, Surface Magazine, and Owners: a French magazine exclusively for Aston Martin owners, in addition to winning an internationally acclaimed Aโ Design Award 2019.
