Molly Hatch, Illume, USA, 2016
Using ceramicย surfaces as both her canvas and subject matter, Molly Hatch extends her historically-inspired contemporary repertoire withย Illume, a hand-painted wallย installation. Illumeย is a contemporary example of chinoiserie, a popular seventeenth and eighteenth-century aesthetic movement that persists today.ย
Composed ofย 45 earthenware hand-painted plates, theย glazed surfaces of the plates collectively become a fragmented canvasย for Hatchโs delicate, painterly re-rendering ofย a blue and white lidded vase sourcedย from an eighteenth-century French watercolor from the Metropolitanย Museum of Art. Withย a shimmering 11-karat gold gilded background,ย Illumeย contemporizes the historic work of art.
In 2009, Hatchโs career took off after she was awarded the prestigious Arts/Industry Residency in Pottery at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin. Since then, Hatchโs work has been in high demand. In 2013, Hatch had a solo museum exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Alliance and was included in โNew Blue and White,โ a contemporary decorative arts exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 2014,ย Physic Garden, a monumental 456-plate work, was installed at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta as well asย Caughly Landscape, another installation commissioned by the museum and the Woodruff Arts Center. Chronicle Books published Hatchโs first illustrated book of paintings in March of 2015. In 2016, the Clayarch Gimhae Museum in Korea exhibited a selection of wall installations by the artist.
As Hatch works on a commission basis, custom works may be requested.
