George Nakashima (1905-1990) was one of the preeminentย studio furniture makers who emerged from the post-war period. He was born in Spokane, Washington and spent his youth trekking through the forests of the Northwest. These experiences inspired him to study forestry at the University of Washington, though he would switch to architecture after two years.
Throughout his career, Nakashima remained adamantly a craftsman, ever suspicious of the dehumanizing effects of the machine-made. In a 1977 lecture, he explained, โMy relationship to furniture and construction is basically my dialogue with a tree, with a complete and psychic empathy.โ
