New East End exhibits explore Mother Nature and the minutia of the modern world

In Master and Protege, Todd Merrill Studio compares the works of celebrated abstract expressionist painter Knox Martin,94, and his disciple Ezra Cohen, 24, which are shown together for the first time. Martin, who was part of the New York School of expressionists in the 1940s, started teaching Cohen, then 16, at the Art Students League of New York, Martins alma mater. Martins Playful imaginings are swatches of bright, pop like colors Cohens palette in contrast, is more somber, but his paintings are equally exuberant in concept. While each artist draws from his own inspirations the transfer of knowledge and style exhibits itself in the joie de vivre that both artists encompass– Martins akin to bust of laughter, Cohens a restrained smile.
